Typography Gym is an interactive educational website designed to
introduce the fundamental principles of typography through a series of
engaging, hands-on exercises. The project transforms traditional typography
lessons into eight focused activities covering kerning, tracking, rag, widows,
orphans, letterform proportions, readability, and paragraph layout.
Each exercise asks users to make visual decisions and provides immediate
feedback, encouraging them to observe how spacing, rhythm, proportion,
and structure influence written communication. Rather than learning
typography only through definitions and theory, users develop their skills
through experimentation, comparison, and repeated practice.
The project was created to make typography more accessible and
enjoyable for students and beginning designers. Its clean visual system
and simple interactions allow users to concentrate on the typographic
principle presented in each activity. Typography Gym demonstrates how
interactive design can transform complex design concepts into an
approachable learning experience while helping users develop a more
confident, thoughtful, and critical eye for typography.
Typography Gym was developed with the assistance of Codex and
ChatGPT, which supported the project’s coding, content development,
and refinement. As both a designer and a curriculum designer, I believe it is
essential to continue exploring new creative technologies. Learning how to
work thoughtfully with AI tools expands the possibilities of design practice
and provides new ways to develop engaging, accessible, and effective
educational experiences.
